This feels so old school - writing in comments! I like it.

Great uplifting and practical article, comes at an opportune time for me. I had a meandering path as a generalist and am now 'looking for new opportunities'.

Fantastic post as usual Mike, not just for the wave of AI but for job seeking in general. Have already read it twice and shared it as well. Will be referring to it often as people ask "how do I get into AI" or "what's your advice on job seeking."

But wait ... "a one-pizza squad of 1 designer, 1 researcher, 1 PM, and 7 engineers." That's 10 people vying for 8 slices of pizza, sounds like layoffs are coming. ;-)

Great post. Always good to look to the past to give hope for the future. And damn, this AI future is shiny bright.

Thank you for being incredibly kind to the thousands of design applicants and sharing the practical tips from the sausage factory. This is what matters the most as a design leader.

I found your post on LI, and honestly, I've come back to it again and again over the last few days. I switched careers into tech, was a content designer for 6 years, then switched again last year into product design--right as AI was taking off. Reading your blog has been so reassuring while navigating all these changes at work (you inspired me to start playing around with programming voice and tone on GPTs). Plus your resources are incredible. Please, keep up the good work!

In reply to <a href="https://mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2025/03/the-future-favors-the-curious#comment-1422534">Kris</a>.

Kris: Good point. I don't think I know one way or the other how things will work out, so anything is possible. There are some differences between farming and tech though. In particular, farming in general was just a much bigger part of our overall economy pre industrial-age. I see tech as being a *still* growing part of our economy, for the foreseeable future at least. Good food for thought though.

"Think of the farmer 1000 years ago who could feed a few families vs. the farmer of today who can feed an entire town."

The proportion of the population employed in agriculture has decreased dramatically, from almost 50% in 1870 to about 2% today (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmworkers_in_the_United_States). Not sure this bolsters your case.
