I honestly dont remember when I first got involved with Newsvine, or "The Vine" as we often refered to it. It was in the early days. It was a great place to interact, discuss interesting and/or controversial topics. I went to the office to meet some of the founders. I had a great time interacting with other "Viners", respectfully interacting with people whose views conflicted with my own views. The most important factor was being RESPECTFUL. Especially, when discussing controversial topics. This respectful ethic was well adheared to by Viners of all ideologies. But after several years, vitriol started to infect the diologue... Some people were deliberatly trying to disrupt the interaction. The Vine was a great place to interact with people who had differing ideas. This kind of interaction was the perfect way to "get smarter." My prefered ideology is very liberal. While I enjoyed interaction with people of a similar ideology, the most interesting conversations for me involved respectful exporation of differing ideas. That helped me get a better understanding of those ideas, and even to shift my thinking somewhat in some cases. The death of the vine was a very sad loss. Facebook and Twitter don't provide the same kind of interactive experience.

"A person can dream, right?"

Well... I'm dreaming that dream too.

I absolutely loved Newsvine, I was on it from the very beginning until the end, and wrote about 100 articles for the politics section. To this day it’s my favorite site ever — and it’s horrible it was shut down. It really did change, which was not cool, because you don’t mess with success. Sometimes people will complicate things when they don’t have to. I don’t know all the reasons it shut down, but here’s hoping something like it will come our way again, somehow. A person can dream, right?

mikersocal@hotmail.com is my email if anyone from the site remembers me :)

Like so many others posting comments, here, I miss Newsvine too. I was thinking about Newsvine, today, and found this article by Mike.

I was originally submitting my writing, and seeds, under my full name, but soon switched to Shaun V., because people were contacting me at home.

I enjoyed writing my own articles, and fiction stories. I also enjoyed managing the seeded articles from other news publications that people so fervently discussed for hours or days. The commenters often provided valuable insight and information, even the obnoxious participants, who were rarely so odious that I did not want to interact with them.

The fact that there was no political censorship, unless a Newsvine rule was broken, was intriguing and refreshing. The rules were few and clearly detailed. The conversations in which people disagreed were the most lively and interesting, IMO.

When Tyler was hired, he was a very fair moderator.

I, too, was regularly at the top of the leaderboard, something I did not realize until others pointed it out to me.

I really disliked when MSNBC bought Newsvine. It was no longer the friendly interactive site the original creators worked so diligently to establish. I stopped visiting Newsvine daily, at that point, and eventually not at all.

Still, I am glad the captivating original crew that started Newsvine kept it alive for so long.

I miss Newsvine! I prefer it over the cutthroat, beat down sites of today. I liked the news anchor vs the social of today, and I liked the earlier version. If I remember correctly, toward the last year or so there was a major change to the platform. I ducked in and out after that. Some people were funny, serious, constructively rude, but more so than not, most were respectful of other’s opinions. Would love for Newsvine to have a second life!

Hello everyone! I miss Newsvine too. I was just me, liselotte dot newsvine dot com. It was nice having my own URL. I liked the Newsvine logo which one could earn a "leaf" as one progressed on the site. I learned a lot. I enjoyed Newsvine groups. I first found the site in 2010 and stuck with it even after MSNBC took over. I had hope for that transition in ownership and management being good for the site! I was naive. I was wrong. I never had a chance to retrieve my many articles and images as I learned of the site's demise too late. I argued a bit, and like KLSilvers said, I miss the people I argued with! We were fortunate to have a platform to do citizen journalism with Newsvine.

--Freewill wrote a lovely, humanist post on April 21, 2019 above! That's how I feel.
--I remember your illustrations, Robert Blevins! I visited often.
--I remember chloe, who I knew best as cl or maybe cl1. I miss you.
--I saw McSpocky on Twitter. He had tens of thousands of followers there! But it wasn't the same.

For those who asked where else they might go now: There isn't anything like Newsvine anywhere that I've found. NewsTrust went offline several years prior to Newsvine. The entire contributory Web 2.0 is vanishing; it is shifting back to the more traditional media form of broadcasts. Many news websites no longer offer the opportunity to comment. Even Disqus is getting rare. Forums (fora?) a.k.a. user groups still exist, and some tech websites have active discussions areas. There's also Slashdot but that tends to be technical and computing.

Greetings to all newsiners, wherever they may roam! This is bore-head007. I hope I find everyone in good health, and good spirits.
I miss the place, and I'm sure I'm not alone. It is ironic today, that I would see this today. I am writing about the beginnings of fisherynation and the migration of the group to a new home. We had unfinished business. We created fisherynation.com. Today, we posted an archive article that we posted on newsvine Aug. 5th, 2011. I'm going to link this to the post for other former newsviners in the news like Wicked Tuna's Dave Marciano!
