I hate to say it but usability wise, it will be a large undertaking to get there.
Then again the NYT did a great job of extending the same great feel of their newspaper onto the web.

NYC is the best and most worthy city in the states. Its like living in a European city with all the benefits of being in America to boot. Seattle is nice and I could live there if not for all the rain and such.

Understanding what CSS can do to the web is amazing!
It simply cleans up the web from all the clutter and focuses on the content making the pages load much faster and give an over all much better experience.

At the very least they have a good, non-technical description of why the site looks plain in non-CSS-capable browsers:
